See fireworks from Port Washington Inn June 9, 2015

Around the country, people will jockey for position to watch fireworks in celebration of July 4th. After 19  years as innkeepers of the Port Washington Inn, we tend to take for granted our ability to enjoy Port Washington’s fireworks from the comfort of the inn….or the front porch….or the lawn. We love our location and our guests do, too!

Prime real estate for viewing the fireworks from Port Washington Inn is the private balcony of Grace’s Suite and the sitting room of Top of the World Suite; guests also report viewing fireworks from Dorothy’s Room.

Our Two Nights Are Better Than One Special gives you 15% off a two night stay;

Stay Longer and you receive 25% off three or more nights!

Whether you are coming to Port Washington for an excursion on the tall ship Denis Sullivan (in our harbor July 4 & 5), for charter fishing, canoeing or kayaking, strolling the beach, or exploring the Interurban Trail, you will likely be making plans to return to take in the additional outdoor opportunities you didn’t have time for on your first visit.  This is a place rich in history and intent upon honoring its history (visit the amazing Port Exploreum). Good things are happening here; come check us out!

Tall ship Denis Sullivan to visit Port Washington repeatedly this summer! May 29, 2015

Tall ships have been a main attraction of Port Washington festivals, but this summer the tall ship Denis Sullivan will be visiting Port Washington June 25-29, July 4 & 5, and August 21-23! This is great news as so many of our guests over the years have expressed interest in getting out on Lake Michigan.

Take advantage of the multiple night discounts at Port Washington Inn to fully enjoy the pleasures of Port any time. You won’t want to miss visiting the Port Exploreum (newly opened April 21, 2015). And your tastebuds will be happy if you allow them ample time to savor the flavors of Port (BALTICA BISTRO, DAILY BAKING CO., CHOCOLATE CHISEL are just the beginning!)

Port Washington’s claim to fame has always been its maritime heritage and the presence of the Denis Sullivan pays tribute to that as does the newly opened Port Exploreum. Happily, Port’s architectural history is also being honored by the restoration of distinctive buildings.

Port Washington Inn’s building was originally a home built in 1903 by George & Eva Blessing who moved here from Chicago. They built this lovely home on Sweetcake Hill; the house began life as a bed and breakfast in 1991.

Next week we will begin our 20th season as owners/operators of the inn; over the course of our time here, it has been our mission not only to welcome guests to the inn but also to restore ‘this old house’ and to create landscaping to honor it. We truly feel that George and Eva Blessing created a home with a welcoming presence which we are privileged to share with our bed and breakfast guests. We invite you to Port Washington Inn!

Celebrate July at Port Washington Inn July 2, 2013

PWI Rose Extravaganza of Color

PWI Rose Extravaganza of Color

Our roses seem to be competing with the upcoming 4th of July fireworks as their brilliant blossoms create an extravaganza of color! Port Washington Inn’s location four blocks uphill from Lake Michigan allows us to keep an eye on the lake, and yesterday the lake was a gorgeous blue, the perfect backdrop to the roses.

The lake views get better from the balcony of Grace’s Suite (on second floor) and the sitting room of Top of the World Suite (on third floor). But viewing the fireworks is great from Dorothy’s Room or the front porch as well.

The iris put on a great show this year and the daylilies are just beginning to open. Hydrangeas, weigela, and a mystery shrub in our yard have been adding their color and fragrance. A clematis is playing peek-a-boo amidst the roses.

Single night stays are available through July 4th, but we offer 15% discount on a two night stay and 25% discount on three or more nights! Book online or call 262-284-5583.

Celebrate some time together this July!

Ready, Set, Celebrate at Port Washington Inn! September 28, 2012

Ready, Set, Celebrate!!!!

As the month of September draws to a close, we are eagerly awaiting news of the birth of our third grandchild. He is keeping us in suspense and making the distance between us and our daughter’s family seem even greater than usual (they live in Barcelona Spain). News of his safe arrival will indeed be cause to celebrate!

It seems that this is a year of celebrations of all sorts. Another delivery we are eagerly awaiting as September turns to October is the new WBBA (Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast Association) Cookbook which features Port Washington Inn on the cover. Several of our favorite recipes are in this cookbook, and we look forward to trying those of other innkeepers, too. There will be many recipes innkeepers serve to their bed and breakfast guests but some family favorites as well. We’ll have a supply of these cookbooks at the inn as of early October.

Autumn has arrived and that is certainly cause for celebration in a year of record breaking summer heat and drought here in the midwest. The cooler temperatures of autumn have never been more appreciated! Leaf colors are glorious in our area and we know only too well that autumn’s magical color display is fleeting and we must take advantage of it!

Our Stay Longer Special continues to encourage three night stays (or longer) and is a win-win for our guests and for us, too. Our guests benefit from the savings and the lengthier stay the savings afford them; we benefit by getting to know our guests better as we visit over three or more breakfasts.

Biking in the heat of the summer wasn’t so great, but biking now in the autumn is fabulous and a great way to enjoy the colorful leaves. Bring your bikes with you or rent bikes from ZuZu Pedals downtown Port Washington.

Need gear? It’s here now at Duluth Trading Company which just opened their Port Washington store earlier this month. If you haven’t checked out our downtown recently, you are in for a treat as there are increasingly good options on offer in Port Washington. How many of you have visited Baltica Tea Room and Gift Shoppe? Pear and Simple? Victor’s Pier Street Shanty? Wardrobe Safari-Zing? The Chocolate Chisel? Dockside Deli? Okay……a few of these places have been here for awhile, because they make a lot of people happy!

So, carve out an autumn getaway, make your reservations at Port Washington Inn, do a little holiday shopping while taking in the magic of autumn along Lake Michigan where autumn is extended by the warmth of the lake. Savor the savings and the good memories…..of time spent together, of delectable food shared with each other, of peaceful privacy and generous hospitality. It’s downright magical!

Spring, savings, sewing, seeds, songbirds, & cycling at Port Washington Inn April 13, 2012

Daffodil

Daffodils, vinca, and forsythia are adding their color to the landscape and the cool temperatures have prolonged their season. In our nearly sixteen years in this location, we’ve never noticed so much forsythia as this year. The daffodils and vinca in our yard are particularly happy this spring and the lenten rose is a welcoming touch of delicate color as guests pull into our off-street parking area. We eagerly await the blooming of the wallflowers begun from seed last year. We wonder if they will they live up to the pictures in the seed catalog?

The unseasonably warm weather in early March got us out into the yard and prompted a frenzy of enthusiasm for a landscaping project involving lots of mulch and pavers. After further consultation, we downsized the plan to mulch minus the winding paver border we had envisioned. It was hard to let go of that aesthetic element but we know all too well the amount of labor it would involve. And we took seriously the advice that it wouldn’t hold up over time……just like that warm weather didn’t hold up.   But the birds are back and their songs fill the air!

So here we are, waiting for mulch to be delivered and in the meantime accomplishing as many indoor projects as possible before the season gets too busy. Even so, we had to postpone a small painting project this week to accommodate a last minute reservation. In these days of smart phones and tablets, GPS, and apps galore, more and more people find us “on the fly”!   It’s wonderful even when it means redesigning our plans a bit:)

Rita’s sewing room has been busy as she creates new window treatments for Helen’s Room, the main floor powder room, and the west kitchen windows. It is fun to finesse the inn to make it that much nicer for guests and for ourselves.  Undoubtedly you, too, have been spring cleaning and finessing your homes and yards. It’s that time of year!

When you need a break from your labors, come check out the Interurban Bike Trail (take advantage of the Bike Ozaukee County Promotion) and the marina (open as of April 1st).  Port Washington is a happening place these days but not a ‘tourist trap’ so you can enjoy a leisurely time here investigating shops, a wonderful variety of restaurants, a class act tea room (Baltica), Bernie’s European style meat market, wine tasting at Vines to Cellar, handmade chocolates and ice cream at The Chocolate Chisel……plus all the amenities of Port Washington Inn.

Come during April, stay two nights, and get 20% off your stay; three or more nights get 25% off.

Hope to see you soon!

FISH DAY in Port Washington is busy indeed!

Fish Day, a festival celebrating Port Washington’s fishing heritage, will celebrate its 48th year in 2012.  It is always held the third Saturday of July (21st this year) and without a doubt brings more people into Port Washington than any other day of the year.

The warm months of the year are predictably desirable times to visit a lakeshore location and Lake Michigan draws thousands to its shoreline each year. Port Washington is a favorite spot because of its quaint charm, its walkable environment, and the fact that it typically doesn’t feel overrun with tourists. Fish Day is the exception, however, as thousands of people arrive to enjoy the festival.

Increasingly the Port Washington Inn receives reservation requests for Fish Day a year in advance, not only because of the festival itself but also because mid-July is prime time in our area. Because of this, our policies for bookings inclusive of that 3rd Saturday in July fall under the category of HIGH DEMAND DATES and are handled as follows:

1) January 1st of the year of the reserved dates, a 50% NONREFUNDABLE DEPOSIT is required to hold the reservation. This may be charged to a Mastercard or VISA or paid by a check received by that date.   The remaining 50% balance due for the reserved dates is payable 30 days prior to the stay (also by check or Mastercard/VISA).

2) Reservations for Fish Day made 14 or more days in advance of the reserved dates require a 50% NONREFUNDABLE DEPOSIT at the time of booking.   Cancellations of such reservations made 30 days or more prior to the reserved dates will receive a credit certificate in the amount of the deposit less $25 cancellation fee per room reserved.   The credit certificate is valid through June of the following year.

3) Discounts applicable to other dates do not apply to this high demand weekend.
