Dancing daffodils! April 29, 2016

DANCING DAFFODILS

DANCING DAFFODILS

Maybe……..possibly……..can it be?  YES!  There ARE daffodils dancing in our yard!  Are they confused?  Do they think it’s spring just because April is about to turn to May?   Haven’t they heard about climate change?  Evidently not; these harbingers of spring are undeterred!

Dancing daffodils might be good mascots for those of us waiting for perfect weather before we make plans.  Increasingly it seems that weather predictions have us in their grip…….this might happen……that may happen……   We forget that when we couldn’t access weather predictions 24/7, we had more freedom to make plans!  Perhaps, like the daffodils, we were hardier for being undeterred.

Having a good time isn’t about waiting for optimum conditions?   Maybe not, and that would be the good news!

Come to Port Washington Inn where the inn weather will make you smile:)

Tall ship Denis Sullivan to visit Port Washington repeatedly this summer! May 29, 2015

Tall ships have been a main attraction of Port Washington festivals, but this summer the tall ship Denis Sullivan will be visiting Port Washington June 25-29, July 4 & 5, and August 21-23! This is great news as so many of our guests over the years have expressed interest in getting out on Lake Michigan.

Take advantage of the multiple night discounts at Port Washington Inn to fully enjoy the pleasures of Port any time. You won’t want to miss visiting the Port Exploreum (newly opened April 21, 2015). And your tastebuds will be happy if you allow them ample time to savor the flavors of Port (BALTICA BISTRO, DAILY BAKING CO., CHOCOLATE CHISEL are just the beginning!)

Port Washington’s claim to fame has always been its maritime heritage and the presence of the Denis Sullivan pays tribute to that as does the newly opened Port Exploreum. Happily, Port’s architectural history is also being honored by the restoration of distinctive buildings.

Port Washington Inn’s building was originally a home built in 1903 by George & Eva Blessing who moved here from Chicago. They built this lovely home on Sweetcake Hill; the house began life as a bed and breakfast in 1991.

Next week we will begin our 20th season as owners/operators of the inn; over the course of our time here, it has been our mission not only to welcome guests to the inn but also to restore ‘this old house’ and to create landscaping to honor it. We truly feel that George and Eva Blessing created a home with a welcoming presence which we are privileged to share with our bed and breakfast guests. We invite you to Port Washington Inn!

2015 PGA Tournament Lodging at Port Washington Inn: 5th night FREE! February 9, 2015

August 2015 will be an exciting time as the PGA Tournament revisits Whistling Straits just 30 minutes north of Port Washington! That 30 minutes can be considered a ‘buffer zone’ between the congestion of an event of this magnitude and the laid back access to Lake Michigan at Port Washington.

Port Washington Inn is a bed and breakfast in the truest sense: an historic home that now accommodates and pleases guests (check our TripAdvisor reviews)! We have blocked out eight nights (August 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) in order to allow guests to choose the 4 nights they deem essential plus a 5TH FREE NIGHT…..yes, that is four paid nights plus a 5th night FREE!

Because the nature of this event makes it a high demand event in our area, the policies applicable to booking these dates differ from our routine policies.

POLICIES FOR THE 2015 PGA DATES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1) Each guestroom will accommodate a maximum of 2 people (and the reservation assumes the same two people over the duration of the reservation)

2) A 50% NONREFUNDABLE DEPOSIT is required at the time of booking

3) Balance of the reservation total is due April 30th, 2015. Any existing reservation cancelled by this date will receive a credit certificate in the amount of the deposit; the credit certificate is good for one year from the date of issue. Cancellations after April 30, 2015 will not qualify for credit certificates.

The five guestrooms at Port Washington Inn include en suite bathrooms and rates are as follows:

Top of the World Suite and Grace’s Suite: $249/night (available August 15/16/17 only)

Dorothy’s Room: $199/night X 4 = $796 + tax
(when taking advantage of the 5th free night, this room = $159.20/night + tax)

Helen’s Room and Noelle’s Room: $189/night X 4 = $756+ tax

All stays include WIFI throughout the inn, a full breakfast in our formal dining room plus early morning coffee service (only the best coffee!!), access to a beverage center throughout your stay, common areas both inside and outside the inn, and off-street parking (no parking hassles). The inn is 3-5 blocks from everything downtown including restaurants, shops, the marina, parks, the 1860 Light Station/Museum, the Interurban bike trail throughout Ozaukee County, and parks along Lake Michigan’s shores…..and the Port Washington Exploreum which opens this spring!

Lake Michigan has the effect of lengthening the season of autumn along its shorelines; a hike through Lions Den Gorge or Harrington Beach State Park will nourish your senses with their natural beauty.

These photos were taken October 20, 2012 at Lions Den Gorge where leaves had fallen to create a carpet of autumn colors underfoot while random wildflowers still bloomed and some golden leaves held fast to a tree along the beach. Along the trail vibrant orange leaves proclaimed the season!

Everything’s coming up roses at Port Washington Inn! July 7, 2014

IMG_1049roses

We recall our earliest years of innkeeping when we coveted the landscapes with profusions of roses spilling over fences or trellises. If felt like a dream come true when we could admire our own roses spilling over the pergola that Dave and Aaron built. In spite of our ignorance of roses in general, they have proven to be dependable in our landscape. Our white rugosa rose blooms first, followed closely by the roses you see in the photo above (would that we could recall what rose we planted!).

The roses (and each shrub and perennial that survived this past winter) are treasured for their durability as well as their beauty.

Make memories this fall at Port Washington Inn August 8, 2013

We just celebrated our 46th anniversary and, in years prior to innkeeping, we often spent the first two weeks of August celebrating Dave’s birthday and our anniversary while on vacation. Most typically we vacationed at our modest lakeshore place on Little Spirit Lake which is part of the Iowa Great Lakes.

On a map, the Iowa Great Lakes look like puddles compared to the Great Lakes we now know and love. But they afforded our family the opportunity to go to the beach, to row a boat, to fish, and to cook over a campfire; we have years of great memories! Often we made a trip back to our garden to harvest fresh vegetables to enjoy at the lake, and the lugs of peaches we would buy at Fareway were exquisitely sweet and juicy.

One of the perks of being at the lake was that there was no phone! Imagine that…..no way for anyone to reach us. It was family time, pure and simple. What a luxury to experience those days. With only our appetites and the beach to impose structure on each day, they truly felt like ‘the endless days of summer’.

How many ‘endless days of summer’ have you experienced this year? It feels to us that
summer took such a long time arriving that it has been short-changed. All the more reason for each of us to enjoy fall to the fullest! Here along the lakeshore, fall is extended, and it is truly a beautiful season to enjoy the outdoors.

We are now offering single night stays (Monday through Thursday) at the discounted midweek rate during September and October.

Weekends, single night stays may be booked one week in advance of arrival. All to help you take advantage of the lovely season of fall.

Those of you who have been challenged by weather to get in your quota of biking or hiking this summer will love the Interurban Trail in September or October. As you may recall, Port Washington is approximately mid-point on the Interurban and Port Washington Inn is three blocks from the trail.

We have a new restaurant in town! The Twisted Willow is making many people’s dining experience happy these days. We appreciate their atmosphere, their service, and their commitment to food that is fresh, creative, and reasonably priced.

Port Washington also has a new lakeshore park, Coal Dock Park. It’s in its infancy, but the walking paths are in place and there is an aerial video that gives an idea of how this space connects to the marina area. Our W.J. Niederkorn library has collected images of the coal dock’s history.

And we’ll pass on to you what recent guests shared about the teriyaki smoked salmon they purchased on a stick from Ewig Brothers…..”hands down, the best smoked salmon we’ve ever had!”
