Mother’s Day weekend in Port Washington Wisconsin May 7, 2015

Port Exploreum Grand Opening

How will you celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend? This time of year finds us all in the mood to take advantage of being outside…….but what if Mother Nature isn’t providing the weather we yearn for? Here’s an idea the entire family can enjoy, rain or shine! YES, you will learn a thing or two, but NO, you won’t be yawning…..far from it.

Sometimes distance makes it impossible to celebrate with our mothers, but a gift certificate to Port Washington Inn will convey the message and give your mother something to look forward to; order online or give us a call at 262-284-5583. We can email the gift certificate to you or to your mother!

Or put together a last minute stay at the inn this weekend; anything is possible!

Half Past April April 17, 2015

IMG_1135_1

It’s half past April, boats are returning to the marina, the Port Exploreum opens April 21st, the Port Washington Inn is newly reshingled, perennials are up, and birdsong is in the air: WELCOME SPRING!

Those of you from the midwestern USA intuit the joy with which spring is welcomed on the heels of winter here in Port Washington, Wisconsin, where we tend to be especially thankful for the warmth of a spring day and a day of sunshine that colors Lake Michigan in endless shades of blue.

Attending the preview of the Port Exploreum last evening, the view of the blue lake from the Exploreum was ‘frosting on the cake’ to this feat of renovation and engineering designed to share the history of Port Washington’s Lake Michigan legacy. It is at once a worthy renovation paying tribute to the original architecture of the space and an engaging interactive environment in which to explore Port Washington’s unique story over time.

While the exploreum is essentially a tribute to Port’s maritime history, through November, it also houses the photo exhibit (and original darkroom) of “Vernon Biever, The Man Behind the Camera; his images of the legendary Coach Vince Lombardi and five world championship teams helped turn the 1960’s Packers into the most romanticized professional football dynasty.”

The Port Washington Historical Society along with a cast of dedicated volunteers and worthy donors has created this tribute to Port Washington’s history. Our guests have been enjoying the tours of the 1860 Historic Light Station for years (an earlier project of the P.W. Historical Society).

Last Sunday afternoon The Schumacher Building in downtown P.W. was honored for its designation on the Registry of Historic Places (another example of the Historical Society’s contributions). Port Washington is moving forward by honoring its past, very much as the Port Washington Inn honors its past by ensuring the integrity of the home built by George & Eva Blessing in 1903.

We invite you to return to Port Washington and to Port Washington Inn to celebrate your personal history!

FISH DAY in Port Washington is busy indeed! April 13, 2012

Fish Day, a festival celebrating Port Washington’s fishing heritage, will celebrate its 48th year in 2012.  It is always held the third Saturday of July (21st this year) and without a doubt brings more people into Port Washington than any other day of the year.

The warm months of the year are predictably desirable times to visit a lakeshore location and Lake Michigan draws thousands to its shoreline each year. Port Washington is a favorite spot because of its quaint charm, its walkable environment, and the fact that it typically doesn’t feel overrun with tourists. Fish Day is the exception, however, as thousands of people arrive to enjoy the festival.

Increasingly the Port Washington Inn receives reservation requests for Fish Day a year in advance, not only because of the festival itself but also because mid-July is prime time in our area. Because of this, our policies for bookings inclusive of that 3rd Saturday in July fall under the category of HIGH DEMAND DATES and are handled as follows:

1) January 1st of the year of the reserved dates, a 50% NONREFUNDABLE DEPOSIT is required to hold the reservation. This may be charged to a Mastercard or VISA or paid by a check received by that date.   The remaining 50% balance due for the reserved dates is payable 30 days prior to the stay (also by check or Mastercard/VISA).

2) Reservations for Fish Day made 14 or more days in advance of the reserved dates require a 50% NONREFUNDABLE DEPOSIT at the time of booking.   Cancellations of such reservations made 30 days or more prior to the reserved dates will receive a credit certificate in the amount of the deposit less $25 cancellation fee per room reserved.   The credit certificate is valid through June of the following year.

3) Discounts applicable to other dates do not apply to this high demand weekend.

Opalescent Lake Michigan at dusk from South Beach, Port Washington August 27, 2011

Timing, as they say, is everything.  In the world of photography that is especially so and this photo is credited to chance, not planning!

Last weekend as Port Washington’s Maritime Festival came to a close late Sunday, Dave and I took off for a walk to enjoy the beneficent weather.  The tall ships were still in the harbor and we ventured to Upper Lake Park to enjoy the view, then crossed the festival grounds to South Beach where we were rewarded with this view of Lake Michigan.  Opalescent is the word that always comes to my mind when the lake’s surface reflects these subdued pastels.

South Beach is officially the launch area created for kayaks and canoes and, sure enough, four kayakers were paddling serenely in the calm waters.

Here is one sample of the many images available on Port Washington’s new website unveiled as the month of May begins.   This new website is testimony that good things happen when people join forces and collaborate.   Kudos to the people who have worked hard to make this new (and much needed) website a reality!

Sow Some Happiness April 2, 2011

April has arrived and in the midwest just saying “April” conjures up ideas of freedom from winter’s dominance and the promise of a garden, however small or grand! As we plant the seeds we ordered for our garden, we are reminded of the promise that is intrinsic in sowing seeds; each seed promises to deliver some happiness and the anticipation is a big part of the ‘happiness quotient’!

The same could be said of a getaway; the planning and anticipation can multiply the enjoyment. So, we asked ourselves, how could we best help our guests to SOW SOME HAPPINESS?

First, by offering the flexibility to book 1,2,3, or more nights using our online reservation system (always accurate and available 24/7) OR by calling us (262-284-5583). With all of the special occasions coming up, a Gift Certificate can Sow Some Happiness while allowing the specific dates to be settled upon later.

Second, by offering added value. We feel strongly that our guests deserve the best we can offer; it’s summed up by “generous hospitality” and “peaceful privacy” because we know your time together is precious. And although one night away can be wonderful, more is better! So our Celebration Special (celebrating our years in business) offers 15% discount on a two night stay this year! And our Stay Longer Special offers 25% discount on three or more nights.

Our new website is more visually appealing with the addition of some professional photographs to augment those we’ve taken. Each room now displays a Rate Range with Saturday nights (weekend rates) differentiated from other nights of the week (weekday rates). Grace’s Suite rates are further differentiated seasonally because of the private balcony and Top of the World Suite because of the gas fireplace. Our online reservation system is programmed with the appropriate rate for each room for each date and will compute the price of your stay once you’ve specified date(s), number of guests and any applicable specials.

Or give us a call; we will always answer the phone if at all possible but sometimes Murphy’s Law predicts that three things are happening at once. If we don’t answer, PLEASE leave us a voicemail or a call back number or send us a quick text or an email. We WILL get back to you.

Good things are happening in Port Washington! Those of you who were here in 2010 may have used the grand stairway that connects Upper Lake Park with the North Beach; now there is a very accessible South Beach and a trail leading south from it. Remember the sunrise over Lake Michigan? The sunrise pictured was taken from the private balcony of Grace’s Suite (also pictured) and a slightly more lofty view is available from Top of the World Suite; Dorothy’s Room with its east facing windows heralds the sunrise, too. Sunrises and birdsong greet the day, and if you are a bird enthusiast our local birding guides will help you identify the many species inhabiting our area.

Port Washington’s historic downtown is being revitalized! Wardrobe Safari and Zing have moved into one of the grand buildings along Franklin Street’s north end near Pear & Simple which has established a refreshing presence in a space that used to be all about antiques. A former jewelry store across the street is in the process of morphing into a refined tea house with specialty gifts from Poland! Not only will you find items in fine taste, but also tasty finds from such shops as The Chocolate Chisel, Bernie’s European Style Meat Market, Dockside Deli, Vines to Cellar, Fireworks Popcorn, Java Dock and Smith Bros. coffee shops. Round that out with locally owned and operated restaurants specializing in everything from Italian to Mexican to German to Greek cuisine plus the all-American favorites. We are indeed fortunate to have such variety within a few blocks of Port Washington Inn!

Many of you have enjoyed our local Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings. Now the market has been extended throughout the winter months. We’ll be writing more about it on our blog so stay tuned!

Some of you have ordered our Gourmet Picnic (available May through October) to take with you to a local park or on the Interurban Trail. This can facilitate enjoying the great outdoors together without interrupting your day to find refreshment. Cost of the picnic is $45 for two people and requires advance notice. Click on ENHANCE YOUR STAY to add a picnic to your reservation if you are using our online reservation system.

Birds have arrived,

April has arrived,

hopefully YOU, too, will arrive…… to enjoy the pleasures of Port Washington while experiencing the generous hospitality and peaceful privacy of the
Eco Elegant Port Washington Inn
where you can savor award-winning food!

Sow some happiness and watch it grow!
