November 8th we began singing “Life is just a bowl of cherries….” after our Door County Cherry Bread Pudding received the Grand Prize in the WBBA cook-off in Wisconsin Dells!
Many of our previous guests know just how delicious this bread pudding is and we think the recent addition of a cherry sauce made with sweet and tart cherries is the crowning touch.
Judges for the cook-off represented the Wisconsin Cherry Growers, Midwest Living Magazine, and the prestigious Del-Bar in Lake Delton.
Our thanks to the Wisconsin Association of Bed and Breakfasts for extending this opportunity for us to showcase the type of breakfast we proudly offer our guests.
The Door County Cherry Bread Pudding is a recipe we originated using our homemade wheat bread for which we grind the wheat berries. It is lightly sweetened with Wisconsin maple syrup and plentiful dried Door County cherries are baked into the bread pudding. It is delicious as is but even tastier with a sauce of sweet and tart whole or pureed cherries over the top. We serve lean beef bacon (from Kewaskum) and freshly cultured plain yogurt to complement the bread pudding. Add a steaming cup of our coffee (from Anodyne Roasters in Milwaukee) and you’ll agree that “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries”!
It’s just possible that “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” is the perfect song for our time. Take a look at the lyrics…….
Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don’t take it serious; life’s so mysterious.
You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.
So keep repeating it’s the berries,
The strongest oak must fall,
The sweet things in life, to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?
Life is just a bowl of cherries,
So live and laugh at it all.
Give your beloved “a bowl of cherries” with a gift certificate to the Port Washington Inn this holiday season. Gift certificates can be purchased in any amount and are good for a year. You may even decide to take advantage of our winter “Life’s a Bowl of Cherries” Special in effect New Year’s Eve weekend through March.
